reflections of Kathryn Rose, Cornish Gig, on Whitesands Beach

All of the gigs were built by Ralph Bird. Beautiful gigs, made from wood and copper nails, most six oared. I don't know how many of these Ralph Bird has made in his lifetime, but what a fine thing to do, to create such beautiful things that give so much pleasure to all the people who row them. Lined up on the beach on this stunning evening they looked amazing. As they came back to shore the sound of the oars on the wooden pegs, the call of the seagulls, the lift and turn of the waves, the smell of the salt sea, the colour of the boats reflected in water, all was a simple praise song to a fine craftsman.

Thanks to Tom and Kath for making it happen.
